Signora Sophie Cruvelli wasn't Italian. She was born Sophie Cruwell in Germany in 1826.
Cruvelli was her stage name.
She was a dramatic soprano who had a brief but stellar public career in London and Paris in the middle of the 19th century. She was admired for her vocal powers and as a tragedienne. Both Verdi and Meyerbeer created operatic roles for her.
