An antique, monochrome steel engraving of opera singer Signora Cruvelli, circa 1860. Signora Sophie Cruvelli wasn't Italian. She was born Sophie Cruwell in Germany in 1826, Cruvelli was her stage name.
She was a dramatic soprano who had a brief but stellar public career in London and Paris in the middle of the 19th century. She was admired for her vocal powers and as a tragedienne. Both Verdi and Meyerbeer created operatic roles for her.
