These two framed watercolours show the same Brighton view, but around 120 years apart. The older painting is the work of prominent watercolour artist William Alfred Delamotte (1775 - 1863).
Born into a French refugee family in England, he gained royal patronage from King George III and later became a drawing-master at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was well known for his depictions of architectural and landscape scenes, particularly of Brighton.
The newer painting dates from the 1980's, and is signed Stephen D Johnston. We have scoured the internet to find out more about him, but to no avail! Was he simply a very gifted amateur? Do get in touch know if you think you know who he is.
The watercolours measure approx: 26cm x 17cm
The frame size is approx: 57cm x 45cm
