A fine, monochrome, antique steel engraving of the composer George Frederic Handel (1685 - 1759), by James Thomson (1788 - 1850). Handel was a German, later British, baroque composer who spent the bulk of his career in London, becoming well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems and organ concertos. He was strongly influenced by both the great composers of the Italian baroque, and by the German polyphonic choral tradition. James Thomson was an English engraver known for his portraits. He completed his apprenticeship in engraving and then established himself independently. His engravings and paintings featured both leading figures of the day and those of previous periods. Mounted. Unframed.
