An antique, hand coloured steel engraving of Duchess Louise of La Valliere. Drawn by ET Parris, engraved by H Robinson and published circa 1844.
Louise de la Valliere (1644 - 1710) was a mistress of Louis XIV of France from 1661 to 1667. She later became Duchess of La Valliere. Louise was very religious despite her 'indiscretion' and led a religious penance for herself near the end of her life, which explains this inscription below her portrait : Afterwards Sister Louise of the Order of Misericordia in the Convent of the Carmelites.
