A lithograph in original colours by J Brandard, printed by M & N Hanhart, and published by Messrs Fores, London 1847.
Johanna Maria 'Jenny' Lind was a Swedish opera singer, often called the 'Swedish Nightingale'. One of the most highly regarded soprano singers of the 19th Century, she performed in operatic roles in Sweden and across Europe, and even went to the USA in 1850, where she toured at the invitation of PT Barnum. She gave 93 concerts for him, and then continued to tour under her own management. She earned more than $350,000 from these concerts, and donated the proceeds to Swedish educational charities. She settled in England in 1855, and lived in Herefordshire until her death in 1887.
In this lithograph we see her as Maria in La Figlia del Regimento (The Daughter of the Regiment) by Donizetti. It was a favourite role of hers.
