A hand coloured, antique copper engraving of the actor Mr Oxberry playing the character Mawworm. Drawn by T Wageman, engraved by HR Cook and published circa 1810. William Oxberry (1784 - 1824) was a much sought after actor during the Georgian period. Here we see him playing Mawworm in The Hypocrite, written by Isaac Bickerstaffe in 1769. He was considered to be a useful comic actor, and he worked non stop throughout his career. He was also an author, with several books, mostly about the theatre, to his credit. Like many actors of the time, he over indulged in the good things of life, and in 1824, at the age of 40, eventually succumbed to an apoplectic fit, apparently bought on by an attack of delirium tremens. Oh dear....
