The island of Quiloa is now known as Kilwa Kisiwani, and is off the southern coast of modern day Tanzania in eastern Africa. It was the centre of the Kilwa Sultanate, a medieval sultanate whose authority at its height in the 13th - 15th Centuries stretched the entire length of the Swahili coast.
The island has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
