Mr. Spooner was a London based printer who, in the 1840s, made card and paper novelties which he called Protean Views. Each view comprised a cardboard frame with a hand-coloured paper picture printed on it. When you hold it up to strong light, such as sunlight, a new image appears.
Number 6 shows Haddon Hall, Derbyshire. When held up to the light you seen the moon shining and the shadows from the moonlight. The back of the print mount is left open to enable you to see the novelty working, and a detailed description is in the panel below.
These Protean Views are very rare and collectable.
Mounted. Unframed.
