Entitled 'The Engagement in the Mediterranean on the 28th of Feb 1758 between the Monmouth an English Man of War of 64 guns, and the Foudroyant, a French Man of War of 84 guns, in which the latter was taken'. This event took place in the Battle of Cartagena, off Cartagena, Spain, The Monmouth's Captain Gardiner was wounded early in the fight, and died, and his two lieutenants commanded the ship for most of the battle. The captain of the Foudroyant insisted on handing his sword to the lieutenants when he surrendered. This hand coloured copper engraving is for Russel's History of England, circa 1780. Mounted. Ready to frame.
